NOLS offers leadership and team training in a challenging outdoor environment and has the desired level of knowledge, expertise, and experience to conduct expedition and outdoor leadership training. NOLS offers the combination of remoteness and focused leadership skill development that provides distinct synergistic learning opportunities for teams managing risk in the implementation of complex scientific missions and the conduct of scientific field campaigns in remote, stressful, and harsh environments." "NASA/GSFC has a requirement for participation in the PolarTREC (Teachers and Researcher Exploring and Collaborating)program. PolarTREC is a program in which K-12 teachers spend 2-6 weeks participating in hands on field research experience in the polar regions. NASA/GSFC intends to purchase the services from Arctic Research Consortium of The United States (ARCUS). Participating projects, such as IceBridge, are selected through competitive proposals that are selected by a panel. IceBridge submitted a proposal and has been selected to participate in the PolarTREC (Teachers and Researchers Exploring and Collaborating). The PolarTREC program is manage by the Arctic Research Consortium of the United States and housed in Fairbanks, Alaska. ARCUS is a member consortium of educational and scientific institution that have a substantial commitment to arctic research. There is no other organization or vendor that offers this kind of specialized education and outreach program for polar research." More

The pool of candidates for the NAI/APS 2011 competition was the largest we have ever experienced. Typically six to seven selections are made annually, however for 2011 twelve young investigators were selected for the Lewis and Clark Fund for Exploration and Field Research in Astrobiology.

The American Philosophical Society and the NASA Astrobiology Institute have partnered to promote the continued exploration of the world around us through a program of research grants in support of astrobiological field studies undertaken by graduate students, postdoctoral students, and junior scientists and scholars.

Imagine equipping NASA Away Teams in the field or astronauts in space with these devices and allowing all of us back home to literally peer over their shoulders as they work and live in space and exotic research locations on our own planet.

Tomorrow, a NASA-sponsored Field Training and Research Program begins at Meteor Crater, Arizona. The field training will be led by Dr. David Kring, a geologist and Senior Staff Scientist at the Lunar and Planetary Institute in Houston, Texas.

Twenty-four Ph.D. and Master's degree-seeking students from across the U.S., and the world, have been selected to be a part of this week-long training program beginning October 16 and ending October 24, 2010. Students will be trained on how craters on Earth and the Moon form, which should better prepare them in impact-cratered terrain, whether on Earth, the Moon, Mars, or some other solar system planetary surface.
